The race was first held in 1900 as a Principal Race over 5 furlongs (about 1000 metres) and was won by a horse called Willie. It wasn’t held in 1901. In 1979 the distance was increased to 1200m and it was given Group 2 status in 1979 then was upgraded to a Group 1 event between 1985 to 1998, although it was not held in 1993 and 1997. It returned to the current Group 2 status in 1999.

Interesting trivia: In 1989 Paklani was first past the post ahead of Highpak but was later disqualified because of a positive swab. There were dead-heats for the win in 1922 and 1908.
